IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The rendered diagram illustrates the information about making of fabric from bamboo.
Looking from an overall perspective, this given process involves 9 steps. Starting with the grown bamboo plant, harvesting, cutting with blades, filtering, spinning, weaving and final product.
Looking at the diagram in more details, it can be clearly seen that firstly bamboo plant is grown in spring season and then harvested by farmers in autumn season. Moreover, then bamboo is converted into strips with help of blade then strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. Although, strips are then filtered to separate long fabric from liquid.
Turning toward the rest of the details, it can be clearly seen that filtered fibres are then softened by adding water and amine oxide. Next, the fibres are spinned to make ring yam. Lastly, with the help of weaving process, fabric is produced and finally become ready for making the final products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from growth to the final product. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate, as it lists 9 steps while the diagram shows a more complex flow. The description of the process is generally clear, but some details are slightly confused, such as the claim that the process involves 'separating long fabric from liquid' during the filtering stage, which misinterprets the technical nature of the diagram. To improve, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant trends or stages rather than just counting steps, and focus on accurately describing the transformation of materials at each stage.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the process. Cohesive devices such as 'firstly', 'moreover', 'turning toward', and 'next' are used to guide the reader through the sequence. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the use of 'Although' at the start of a sentence where it does not function as a logical contrast. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect the stages of the process more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'harvested', 'crushed', 'liquid pulp', and 'softened' used correctly. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'spinned' (the correct past participle is 'spun') and 'ring yam' (likely a misspelling of 'yarn'). The range is sufficient to describe the process, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise technical terminology related to manufacturing processes and ensure correct word forms are used consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' bamboo plant, 'the' weaving process) and incorrect verb forms ('spinned' instead of 'spun'). Additionally, some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'The rendered diagram illustrates the information about making of fabric'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement and article usage would improve the overall accuracy.
