IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the transformation of bamboo into fabric yarn. There are 9 steps in which bamboo is processed and converted into bamboo fabric.
Overall, the plantation of bamboo in the spring season is a major part of the whole process, whereas bamboo is cut into strips by machines.
Firstly, bamboo is planted in the spring season and the harvesting time is in the autumn season. Afterwards, bamboo sticks are cut into strips by machines. Moreover, the crushed strips are collected to make liquid pulp. After extracting the liquid, it goes through a filtration process in which the long fibers are separated from the liquid. Furthermore, water and amine oxide are added to produce softened fibers from the long fibers. Finally, the yarn is produced through this process. After that, it goes through the process of weaving to make fine fabric. The fabric is then used to produce clothes, socks, etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all stages of the process, from planting to the final product. However, the overview is weak; it focuses on the season of planting rather than summarizing the key stages of the manufacturing process. The description of the steps is accurate, but it lacks a clear synthesis of the transformation process. To improve, the overview should highlight the main phases, such as the conversion of raw bamboo into pulp and the subsequent chemical and mechanical processing into yarn and fabric. The current response is a bit mechanical in its listing of steps, which prevents it from reaching a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, following the chronological order of the diagram. Paragraphing is used, although the second paragraph is quite short. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Afterwards', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' is present, but it feels somewhat repetitive and mechanical. The flow between sentences is generally clear, but the transition between the chemical processing and the final weaving stage could be smoother. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner, but the use of linking words could be more varied and sophisticated to improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'transformation', 'filtration', and 'softened fibers' used correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic verbs like 'make' and 'produce'. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to manufacturing processes, such as 'extracting', 'processing', 'converting', or 'synthesizing'. The current lexical range is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. For example, the use of passive voice ('bamboo is planted', 'strips are collected') is appropriate for a process description. However, the range of complex structures is limited. To improve, you could experiment with more varied sentence beginnings and more complex subordinating conjunctions to link the stages of the process more fluidly. The current control of grammar is solid, but the lack of structural variety keeps the score in the mid-range.
