IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The illustrations depicts the stages involved in the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.

Overall, this process contains 9 stages. It begins with planting the bamboo in the spring and concludes with finished goods, such as t-shirts, and socks.

Initially, bamboo plants are grown in the springs. Next, these bamboos are harvested in the autumn. Subsequently, the harvested bamboos are later cut into stripes to initiate crushing in order to prepare liquid pulp. In the fifth step, the prepared bamboo pulp is filtered to separate long fibres from liquid.

Following this, the long fibres, which was separated in the last step, are softened by adding water and amine oxide. After that, the softened fibre is spinned to produce yarn. In the next stage, the yarn is weaved to make fabric. In the final stage, clothings like t-shirts, and socks are prepared from the weaved fabric, and this concludes the process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all stages of the process clearly and provides a logical overview. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the starting point (planting) and the end product (clothing). The information is accurate and well-sequenced. To reach a higher band, ensure you avoid minor inaccuracies in the description of the process; for example, you mention 'crushing' to prepare liquid pulp, but the diagram indicates the bamboo is crushed and then processed into pulp. Overall, the task is addressed well, and the main features are highlighted effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The report is logically organized, with a clear progression from the initial planting stage to the final manufacturing of clothing. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Next', 'Subsequently', and 'Following this' to guide the reader through the process. However, the paragraphing is limited; the entire body of the report is contained within one paragraph. To improve, you should split the process into two distinct paragraphs—perhaps one for the raw material processing and one for the manufacturing of the final product—to enhance the logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'manufacturing', 'harvested', 'filtered', and 'softened' appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'stripes' (which should be 'strips') and 'clothings' (clothing is an uncountable noun). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise terminology that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focusing on accurate word forms and collocations will help improve your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'The illustrations depicts' (subject-verb agreement) and 'the long fibres, which was separated' (should be 'were separated' to match the plural subject). Additionally, 'spinned' is an incorrect past participle form of 'spin' (it should be 'spun'). While these errors are present, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the process. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and irregular verb forms.
