IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The illustration depicts the stages involved in the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.
Overall, this process contains 9 stages. It begins with planting the bamboo in the spring and concludes with finished goods, such as t-shirts, and socks.
Initially, bamboo plants are grown in the spring. Next, these bamboos are harvested in the autumn. Subsequently, the harvested bamboos are later cut into strips to initiate crushing in order to prepare liquid pulp. In the fifth step, the prepared bamboo pulp is filtered to separate long fibres from liquid.
Following this, the long fibres, which were separated in the last step, are softened by adding water and amine oxide. After that, the softened fibre is spun to produce yarn. In the next stage, the yarn is woven to make fabric. In the final stage, clothings like t-shirts, and socks are prepared from the woven fabric, and this concludes the process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final products. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a logical summary. To reach a higher band, ensure you include more comparative language or grouping of stages. For instance, you could group the initial agricultural stages (planting/harvesting) separately from the industrial processing stages. While you have mentioned the 9 stages, the description is somewhat linear and could benefit from more synthesis to highlight the transformation process more effectively. Overall, the response is accurate and addresses the prompt well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and a step-by-step description of the process. You have used a good range of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Next', 'Subsequently', and 'Following this' to guide the reader through the stages. Paragraphing is appropriate, though the body paragraph could be split to better separate the agricultural phase from the manufacturing phase. The progression of ideas is clear, and the referencing is consistent throughout the text. The flow is smooth, and the use of transition signals is effective without being overly mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, including terms like 'harvested', 'crushing', 'filtered', and 'spun'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for a process description. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or technical terms related to manufacturing. For example, instead of 'prepared liquid pulp', you could use 'processed into a viscous pulp'. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, though it lacks the variety of less common lexical items required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'the long fibres, which were separated in the last step, are softened by adding water and amine oxide.' Punctuation is generally accurate, although there is a minor error in the final sentence where 'clothings' is used (clothing is an uncountable noun). Most sentences are error-free, and the passive voice is used appropriately to describe a process. The grammatical range is sufficient, and the errors present do not interfere with the clarity of the information provided.
