IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

This diagram illustrates how fibre is manufactured from bamboo.

Overall there are nine stages of how fabric is manufactured in this process, beginning with planting bamboo plant spring and ending with production fabrics and clothing.

Firstly plant a bamboo in spring season then the second stage is to harvest mature bamboo in autumn. The harvested bamboo cut into strips by using cutting machine. These strips are then crushed into the liquid pulp. Next the pulp is filtered to separate long fibres from the liquid.

In the sixth stage the fibres is soften by adding water and amino oxide. After the fibres becomes soft they are spun to make yarn. The yarn is then woven to produce fabric. Finally the fabric is used to make socks, shirts and all kind of wearing clothes that we use in our daily life.

Overall the process involves several mechanical and chemical process to turn bamboo plants into usable fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. The overview is clear and identifies the main features, such as the nine-stage process and the combination of mechanical and chemical methods. However, the description is somewhat repetitive in its structure, and the summary could be more analytical by grouping the stages more effectively (e.g., harvesting, processing, and finishing). While all parts of the task are addressed, the development of the information is quite basic, lacking the sophisticated synthesis expected for higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, following the chronological order of the diagram. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the main body, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Next', 'In the sixth stage', and 'Finally' are used to guide the reader through the process. However, the transitions are somewhat mechanical and repetitive. The flow between sentences is generally clear, but the connection between the final stage and the conclusion could be smoother to improve the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'manufactured', 'mature', 'liquid pulp', and 'woven' used correctly. However, the range is limited and lacks the precision required for higher bands. There are some awkward phrasings, such as 'production fabrics' and 'all kind of wearing clothes', which are slightly unnatural. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise technical collocations related to industrial processes and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'plant a bamboo' (should be 'bamboo is planted'), 'the fibres is soften' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'after the fibres becomes soft' (subject-verb agreement). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate more consistent control over subject-verb agreement and passive voice constructions, which are essential for describing processes.
