IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The Progress diagram shows the process of making fabric from bamboo in 9 clear steps.

Overall, bamboo takes 9 stages to manufacture a cloth. It usually start with the plantation of bamboo plant and ends up in form of clothes in our stores. This process have multiple level of filtration and cuttings done to bamboo plants. Let us understand the stages in details.

Firstly, the idea to manufacture the fabric originate by planting bamboo plants in the field. Once the Autumn season arrives, the harvest of bamboo plants comes in motion and then sent to cut into strips. Adding to that, the cut pieces of strips needs to be crushed to take form of liquid pulp. Moreover, in order to segregate the long pieces of fibres from the liquid, these are sent to filtration section.

Once, the fibre pieces had been removed from the liquid, then water and amine oxide added to loosen the fibres. Furthermore, soften fibres sent for spinning to produce the stack of yarn. Finally, when we have yarn, it will be sent for weaving to make the desired fabric to transform into fancy pieces of clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process. You provided a clear overview and followed the sequence of steps logically. However, to reach a higher band, you should avoid informal phrases like 'Let us understand the stages in details' and focus more on objective reporting. While you covered the process, the description of the final stages (weaving and clothing) is slightly brief. Ensure you include all relevant details from the diagram, such as the specific chemical inputs or the transformation of the yarn, to ensure a more comprehensive summary of the information provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, moving step-by-step through the process. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Once', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader. However, the paragraphing is somewhat limited; the introduction and the body of the process are merged into a single block. Dividing the text into a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and a detailed body paragraph would improve the structure. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical, but the progression of ideas remains clear throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'filtration', 'segregate', and 'spinning' appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'plantation of bamboo plant' (should be 'bamboo cultivation') and 'comes in motion' (should be 'begins'). While you attempt to use more precise terminology, there is a reliance on simpler verbs. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and precise technical terms related to manufacturing processes to enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'It usually start' should be 'It usually starts', and 'the cut pieces of strips needs' should be 'the cut pieces of strips need'. Additionally, there are issues with article usage, such as 'in form of clothes' (should be 'in the form of clothes'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
