IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The presented diagram illustrates the process of use of bamboo for fabric manufacturing.

Overall, it can be seen that the process was quite lenghty, it involves the hardworking of farmers as well as usage of some filter and mixture.

To begin with, bamboo plants planted in favorable condition during spring then harvested by farmers in autumn when they grown fully. After harvestation sent to machine for cutting the large strips into smaller pieces which can easily carried out. These small stripes then crushed to make liquid pulp, as they are now mixture of waste as well as useful product they passes into filter to separate the long fibers from liquid.

Few further steps are also involved in which solution of water and amine oxide was used to make the fibers delicate. As fibers was almost ready it can be spin to make yarn of them. It can be weaven by some machines or manually to make clothes. After weaven it can be alters or shaped into any type of clothes either shirt, jeans and even scarf.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from harvesting to the final product. However, the overview is somewhat weak; describing the process as 'lengthy' and mentioning 'hardworking farmers' is subjective and not based on the data provided. The task requires an objective summary of the technical process. While the key stages are identified, the description of the chemical and mechanical steps (such as the use of amine oxide) lacks the precision expected in an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, focus strictly on the technical progression shown in the diagram rather than adding external commentary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into a logical sequence, following the chronological order of the manufacturing process. Paragraphing is present, though the transition between the initial harvesting phase and the chemical processing phase could be smoother. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'After', and 'Few further steps', but some of these are used mechanically or with slight grammatical awkwardness. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the lack of sophisticated linking phrases limits the flow of the report. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several non-standard word choices, such as 'harvestation' (which is not a standard English word) and 'hardworking of farmers'. Phrases like 'grown fully' and 'make liquid pulp' are functional but basic. The student attempts to use technical terms like 'amine oxide' and 'fibers', which is positive. However, the repetition of simple verbs and the reliance on general terms like 'useful product' suggest a limited range. More precise terminology related to industrial manufacturing would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'bamboo plants planted in favorable condition' (missing article/preposition), 'as they are now mixture' (missing article), and 'as fibers was almost ready' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'it can be weaven' is an incorrect verb form. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb tense usage would be highly beneficial.
