IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram below illustrates the process of manufacturing of fabric from bamboo.
Overall, the process contains total of nine steps starting from plantation of bamboos to ultimately making fabric from extracted fibers and to craft them in useful cloth items.
Process starts with planting of bamboo plants in the season of spring and it is left to mature till autumn where farmers start harvesting bamboo in autumn. Later on harvested bamboo plants are further cut into strip by cutter. In the next stage these strips are crushed to make liquid pulp which is filtered in next step to separate long fibers from liquid.
Subsequently these filtered fibers are soften by adding water and amine oxide. In seventh stage soften fibers are spun to make yarn. In the pre final step yarn is woven to make fabric. In the final step this fabric is crafted into useful cloth pieces like t-shirts and socks for the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from plantation to the final product. The overview is clear and identifies the main stages effectively. However, the response could be improved by incorporating more comparative language or highlighting specific transitions more dynamically. While the key features are reported, the description is somewhat linear and lacks a more analytical approach to the process flow. Overall, it successfully addresses the requirements of the task by summarizing the provided diagram accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a logical progression of steps. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Subsequently', 'In the next stage', and 'In the final step' helps guide the reader through the process. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced to separate the initial growth stages from the industrial processing stages more distinctly. Despite this, the information is easy to follow and the progression is clear throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using process-specific terms like 'harvesting', 'crushed', 'liquid pulp', and 'spun'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'craft them in useful cloth items' and 'soften fibers', which should be 'softened'. While the range is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. The student relies on basic descriptive verbs rather than more precise technical terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with article usage ('the plantation of bamboos', 'in the season of spring') and verb forms ('soften fibers' instead of 'softened fibers'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The control over sentence structure is generally good, but the lack of consistent accuracy in articles and verb tenses limits the overall grammatical performance.
