IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the process of how bamboo fabric is made. There are different nine steps given in this diagram.
The first step is where bamboo plant is grown during the spring season and harvested in autumn. After harvest, bamboo plant is cutted into small strips with help of a cutter and a liquid pulp is made after crushing those strips machnically.
Pulp liquid is filtered in next step and separate long fibres from liquid. Further, water and amine oxide is added to make that fibre soft, which turns into a cotton. Then, soften fibre is spinned to make a yarn from it. The followed process is weaving, which help to make fabric. In the last stage, we can see cloths made from the fabric like T-shirts and socks.
To conclude this given diagram, there are different steps followed to get fabric from a raw bamboo tree. All stages are equally important throughout the whole process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from harvesting to the final product. However, the description is somewhat superficial. For instance, the transition from 'liquid pulp' to 'fibre' lacks detail regarding the chemical and mechanical processes shown in the diagram. While the key features are identified, the response would benefit from a more analytical approach that highlights the transformation stages more clearly. The overview is also quite brief. To improve, ensure that all technical steps are described with more precision rather than just listing them sequentially.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into paragraphs, moving from the initial harvesting stage to the final product. The use of cohesive devices such as 'The first step', 'After harvest', 'Further', and 'In the last stage' helps guide the reader through the process. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. The concluding paragraph is somewhat redundant as it does not synthesize the information effectively but rather repeats the premise. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the reader to follow the process. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'machnically' (spelling) and 'cutted' (incorrect verb form). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors like 'small strips' or 'soften fibre'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise technical terminology related to manufacturing processes, such as 'processed', 'extracted', 'dissolved', or 'transformed', and ensure accurate spelling throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that, while not impeding communication, are noticeable. Examples include 'bamboo plant is grown' (missing article 'the'), 'cutted' (incorrect past participle), 'with help of' (missing article), and 'soften fibre is spinned' (incorrect adjective form and verb conjugation). While the meaning remains clear, these frequent errors indicate a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, correct verb forms, and the appropriate use of articles will significantly improve your score.
