IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The provided picture shows the process of how the clothes are formed using the bamboo.
Overall, it includes the 9 steps to complete the manufacturing process of fabric. The bamboo is firstly planted then harvested then passes through cutting, filtering processes and the result shown in the form of real cloth.
The plant of the bamboo is planted during the season of spring. When it fully prepared for harvesting in the Autumn, it is harvested. The bamboo is cut into strips and those strips are squeezed to extract the liquid of it. the extracted liquid contain the fibers. The filtration of the bamboo pulp is done to remove fibers from it.
In the extracted clean pulp the water and amine oxide is added and then added in the spinner to make the yam. The yam is waved and the required fibric is formed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While the report covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, the description is somewhat superficial. The overview is brief, and the explanation of the chemical and mechanical processes (such as the addition of amine oxide and the spinning process) lacks the necessary detail to fully explain the transformation. Because the response is under-length and lacks sufficient development of the technical stages shown in the diagram, it does not fully address all parts of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction to the process steps. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and mechanical. Phrases like 'The bamboo is firstly planted then harvested then passes through' are repetitive and lack sophisticated linking. While there is a basic progression of ideas, the transitions between sentences are often abrupt, and the paragraphing could be more effectively used to group the chemical and mechanical stages of the process. The overall structure is clear but lacks the flow expected at higher bands.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher score. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'yam' instead of 'yarn' and 'fibric' instead of 'fabric'. Additionally, the phrasing 'the result shown in the form of real cloth' is unnatural. While the student successfully uses process-related terms like 'harvested', 'extracted', and 'filtration', the limited range and the recurring spelling/word-choice errors prevent a higher rating. More precise terminology related to industrial manufacturing would improve the quality of the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the plant of the bamboo', 'in the spinner'), incorrect verb forms ('the yam is waved' instead of 'woven'), and punctuation issues. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of complex sentence structures and the frequency of minor errors limit the score. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and incorporating a wider variety of complex grammatical structures to describe the process more fluently.
