IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided picture shows the process of how clothes are formed using the bamboo.

Overall, it includes the 9 steps to complete the manufacturing process of fabric. The bamboo is firstly planted, harvested in Autumn then passed through cutting, filtering, spinning and waving processes and the result shown in the form of real cloth.

The plants of the bamboo is planted during the season of spring. When it fully prepared for harvesting in the Autumn, it is harvested. The bamboo is cut into strips and those strips are squeezed to extract the liquid of it. The extracted liquid contain the fibers. The filtration of the bamboo pulp is done to remove fibers from it.

In the extracted clean pulp the water and amine oxide is added and then added in the spinner to make the yarn. The yarn is woven and the required fabric is formed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final fabric. However, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the score. While the key features are identified, the description of the chemical process (adding water and amine oxide) is slightly underdeveloped. To improve, ensure you provide a more detailed overview of the transformation stages and ensure the word count requirement is met to allow for a full development of the process description.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into paragraphs, moving chronologically through the stages of the process. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'firstly', and 'then', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced. The flow is generally clear, but the connection between the filtration stage and the chemical processing stage could be smoother to improve the overall progression of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using process-specific terms like 'harvested', 'extracted', 'filtration', and 'woven'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'the result shown in the form of real cloth' and 'the plants of the bamboo is planted'. The range is somewhat limited, and the student relies on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial manufacturing processes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The plants of the bamboo is planted', 'The extracted liquid contain the fibers') and awkward phrasing ('the result shown in the form of real cloth'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the clarity of the report. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement would improve the score.
