IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given diagram shows how fabric is produced from bamboo.

Overall, this process consist of 9 stages from starting with planting and harvesting the bamboo plant and ending with the production of cloths.

To begin with, the first step is to plant bamboo plants in the season of spring and then harvest the bamboo plant after 3 months in the season of autumn. The harvested bamboo plants is placed on the cutter and it assist in cutting into strips and the strips which were cut will be crushed to make liquid pulp. After this there is a process called filter which will help in separating long fibers from liquid. To soften the fibers we need to add water and amine oxide.

Furthermore, soften fibers should spin to make yarn. With the help of yarn weave to make fabric. After weaving the garments will be ready to wear and can be supplied to the manufacturer.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate, as the process described in the diagram does not explicitly show nine stages. Furthermore, the description of the process is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical summary of the key features. While all steps are mentioned, the explanation of the chemical and mechanical transitions (such as the specific role of amine oxide) is a bit simplistic. To improve, ensure the overview highlights the most significant transformations rather than just counting steps, and ensure the data provided in the diagram is interpreted with greater precision.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. The use of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'After this', and 'Furthermore' provides a basic structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes repetitive, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'the strips which were cut will be crushed'. The transition between the chemical treatment and the spinning process is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the stages of production. There are some attempts at technical terminology, such as 'liquid pulp', 'long fibers', and 'amine oxide'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'production of cloths' (should be 'clothing' or 'fabric') and 'soften fibers should spin' (should be 'softened fibers are spun'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic verbs like 'make' and 'help'. Using more precise verbs related to manufacturing processes would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The harvested bamboo plants is placed', 'soften fibers should spin') and missing articles or incorrect word forms. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the process, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on consistent subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential when describing industrial processes.
