IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The flowchart illustrates how bamboo fabrics are manufactured. Overall, the process is quite time consuming but worth it. First of all, the bamboo plants are planted during the spring and on autumn it is harvested manually. Each bamboo is cut into strips but the use of sharp wheel like equipment.
The fibers are crushed to extract the mucous from the fibres. The extract is now in the form od liquid pulp. Then, the long fibres are separated from liquid by the process of filter. The water and amine oxide are added into the fibers to make it soft. After the fiber is soften, it is spined to make yarn. The yarn is weaved in certain pattern to make fabric. Finally, the fabric is used to make the desired cloths including shirt, pant, socks and so on.
By following the protocol, environmental friendly fibric can be made.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from harvesting to the final product. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which negatively impacts the score. While the main features are identified, the description lacks the level of detail required for a higher band. For instance, the transition from 'crushed' fibers to 'liquid pulp' is mentioned, but the specific chemical or mechanical steps are somewhat simplified. The inclusion of personal opinion ('but worth it') is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which should remain objective and analytical. To improve, ensure you meet the word count and focus strictly on describing the provided data without adding subjective commentary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into three paragraphs, which is a logical structure for a process description. There is a clear progression from the initial harvesting stage to the final manufacturing of clothing. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'First of all', 'Then', and 'Finally' are used to sequence the steps, but the flow between sentences could be more sophisticated. Additionally, the final sentence is somewhat disconnected from the rest of the report. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between the stages of the process would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range expected at higher levels. There are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'od' instead of 'of', 'spined' instead of 'spun', and 'weaved' instead of 'woven'. The term 'environmental friendly fibric' also contains a spelling error ('fibric'). While the student successfully uses technical terms like 'liquid pulp' and 'amine oxide', the overall range is limited. To achieve a higher score, the student should focus on accurate spelling and using more precise terminology related to industrial processes, such as 'extrusion' or 'polymerization'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder the reader. For example, 'on autumn it is harvested' should be 'in autumn it is harvested', and 'the use of sharp wheel like equipment' is grammatically awkward. There are also issues with article usage and verb forms, such as 'the process of filter' (should be 'filtration') and 'make it soft' (should be 'make them soft' to agree with 'fibers'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. More attention to subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage is needed.
