IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The flow chart illustrates the process of producing fabric from bamboo plants.

Overall, this is a linear, man-made process, which involves nine stages. It begins with cultivating bamboo plants in the spring season and harvesting them in autumn, and ends with the manufacture and distribution of clothing items such as shirts and socks.

Initially, during the spring season, bamboo plants are planted in fertile soil and then harvested manually in autumn using a cutlass. Following this, the plants are cut into strips using a specialised machine, before being crushed in a machine to produce liquid pulp, which is filtered using a funnel to separate the long fibres from the liquid.

After being softened with water and amine oxide, the fibres are spun into yarn, which is woven into fabric. Finally, the woven fabric is used to manufacture shirts and socks, which are then distributed for sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a clear overview and covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the score. While the key features are identified, the description of the process is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you should ensure you meet the minimum word count and perhaps provide slightly more detail on the specific chemical or mechanical transformations occurring at each stage to ensure the response is fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Following this', and 'Finally' are used effectively to guide the reader through the stages. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. The structure is sound, though the brevity of the response limits the complexity of the cohesive links.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, including terms like 'cultivating', 'harvested', 'specialised machine', and 'liquid pulp'. The word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for a technical description. There are no significant spelling errors. To improve, try to incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The grammar is generally accurate, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You successfully use passive voice constructions, which are essential for describing processes (e.g., 'bamboo plants are planted', 'fibres are spun'). There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. The punctuation is also handled correctly. To achieve a higher band, you could aim to vary your sentence structure further by using more advanced subordinating conjunctions or participle clauses.
