IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The flow chart illustrates the process of producing fabric from bamboo plants.
Overall, this is a linear, man-made process, which involves nine stages. It begins with cultivating bamboo plants in the spring season and harvesting them in autumn, and ends with the manufacture and distribution of clothing items such as shirts and socks.
Initially, during the spring season, bamboo plants are planted in fertile soil, where they grow before being harvested manually in autumn using a cutlass. Following this, the plants are cut into strips using a specialised machine, before being crushed in a machine to produce liquid pulp, which is filtered using a funnel to separate the long fibres from the liquid.
After being softened with water and amine oxide, the fibres are spun to produce yarn, which is woven to make fabric. Finally, the woven fabric is used to manufacture new shirts and socks, which are then distributed for sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process. You have successfully identified the main features, starting from cultivation and harvesting through to the final production of clothing. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the linear nature of the process. The information is accurate and well-selected, ensuring that the reader understands the sequence of events without unnecessary detail. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly highlight the transition points between the chemical and mechanical stages more clearly, as this would demonstrate a more sophisticated grasp of the process flow.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organised, with a clear introduction, a summary paragraph, and two body paragraphs that detail the process chronologically. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Following this', 'After being', and 'Finally' creates a smooth flow of information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the stages of the process. The progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the text. The referencing is clear, and the relationship between the different stages is well-managed, contributing to a coherent and well-structured report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process accurately, including terms like 'cultivating', 'harvested', 'specialised machine', and 'amine oxide'. The word choice is generally precise and appropriate for a technical description. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is natural and fits the context well. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or technical synonyms to describe the transformation of materials, such as 'processed into' or 'converted into', which would elevate the lexical range to a more advanced level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as the use of passive voice ('bamboo plants are planted', 'are cut into strips'), which is highly appropriate for describing a manufacturing process. Punctuation is accurate, and there are very few grammatical errors. The sentence structures are varied, and the control over complex clauses is consistent. The writing is clear and error-free, which allows the reader to focus entirely on the content of the report.
