IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of bamboo fabric from bamboo plants.
Overall, it can be seen that this is a linear process consisting of nine stages, starting with the planting of bamboo and ending with the production of wearable clothes. It is a relatively complicated and time-consuming process.
First of all, bamboo plants are planted on agricultural land in the spring. They are then left to grow until autumn. Once the plants have matured, farmers harvest the bamboo and send it for cutting and processing. At this stage, the bamboo is cut into strips using a machine.
Subsequently, all the strips are crushed into liquid pulp, which undergoes a filtration process in the fifth stage. During filtration, the long fibres are separated from the liquid. In the next stage, water and amine oxide are added to the fibres. This process makes the fibres softer. After that, the fibres are sent for spinning, during which yarn is produced.
Finally, the yarn undergoes a weaving process to produce fabric. In the final stage, this fabric is used to manufacture wearable clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. The overview clearly identifies the linear nature of the process and the total number of stages. The information is logically selected and presented in a clear, chronological sequence. However, to reach a higher band, the response could benefit from more explicit comparisons or a more sophisticated synthesis of the stages, rather than simply listing them sequentially. The description of the process is accurate and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, overview, and the specific stages of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Subsequently', 'In the next stage', and 'Finally' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the sequence. The referencing is clear, and the flow between sentences is smooth. The structure is logical and easy to follow, demonstrating a good command of cohesive elements throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for a process description. The student uses relevant technical terms such as 'matured', 'filtration', 'amine oxide', and 'spinning'. While the range is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks a degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score to the highest bands. The word choice is precise, and there are no spelling or collocation errors that impede communication. The language is natural and fits the context of an academic report well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a good variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions ('bamboo plants are planted', 'fibres are separated') which are essential for describing a process. The sentences are generally error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. The control over grammar is strong, with a mix of simple and complex sentence forms that are handled with accuracy. There are no significant grammatical slips, and the writing is consistently clear and professional throughout the entire response.
