IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The figure illustrates a process consisting of nine steps for fabric production from bamboo plant as a source.

Overall, this process consists of nine major steps to convert bamboo plants into fabric from which clothes are produced. This procedure consists of a cycle of two season: spring and autumn.

People plant bamboo plants in spring season which are harvested in the autumn season. After harvesting, the bamboo sticks are cut into strips. Furthermore, the strips of bamboo plant are crushed to make liquid pulp. Filter is one of the main components that separate the long fibres from liquid important for producing fabric.

The sixth step consists of softening the long fibres separated by the filter by adding water and amine oxide. Spinning makes the softened fibres into yarn. The yarn is used to manufacture fabric by weaving it. Consequently, the fabric is used to produce different clothing including shirt and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. You have successfully identified the main features and followed the chronological order of the diagram. However, the overview is slightly weak; stating that the process consists of 'nine major steps' is a repetition of the introduction rather than a summary of the key trends or stages. To improve, focus on grouping the stages into logical phases, such as the agricultural phase, the chemical processing phase, and the final manufacturing phase. The information is accurate, but the lack of a more analytical overview prevents a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized, with a clear progression from the initial planting to the final clothing production. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of the process. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Furthermore', 'After harvesting', and 'Consequently', which help the flow of information. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the fifth and sixth steps is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'the filter', 'the long fibres') is consistently clear would enhance the cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'harvested', 'liquid pulp', 'amine oxide', and 'spinning'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'liquid important' which is grammatically awkward and unclear. Additionally, the phrase 'cycle of two season' contains a pluralization error. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the process clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more precise technical collocations related to industrial manufacturing processes and ensure accurate word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'People plant bamboo plants in spring season' is missing articles ('the spring season'), and 'cycle of two season' should be 'seasons'. There is also a minor punctuation issue with 'Filter is one of the main components', which should be 'The filter'. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on consistent use of articles and pluralization, and attempt to integrate more varied complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
