IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The process diagram illustrates the nine step production of fabric by using bamboo on domestic level.

Overall, fabirc manufacturing consists of total nine stages including planting, harvesting, filtration and spinning. The procedure is to prepare fabric domestically from bamboo plants.

The first step is plantation of bamboo plants in the season of spring which followed by harvesting it in autumn after required growth of plants. The third step is to cut the bamboo sticks with a sharp blade into strips and those strips then crushed to produce liquid pulp. Using the liquid pulp, filtration process begins which separates the long fibres from liquid. After filtration step, the fibres further mixed with water and amine oxide that helps to soften the fibres. A primary and seventh step of spinnig begins after softening the fibres and the output of this satge is yarn. These yarn balls used to waeve in which piece of cloth is made and this is the most difficult and time consuming stage. Lastly, the previously produced fabric by weaving is used to trasform the pieces of cloth into a shirt and a pair of socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all stages of the process, from planting to the final product. The overview is clear, identifying the nine stages. However, the description is somewhat mechanical, listing steps sequentially without fully synthesising the information or highlighting key comparisons or groupings effectively. For instance, the transition from raw material processing to chemical treatment could be more clearly linked. While the task is addressed, the development of the information is basic, and the inclusion of 'domestic level' is an inaccurate interpretation of the diagram, which depicts an industrial manufacturing process. This misinterpretation slightly impacts the accuracy of the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organised logically, following the chronological order of the process. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction/overview from the body of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'The first step', 'The third step', and 'Lastly' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally repetitive, and some transitions feel mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the 'primary and seventh step' is confusingly phrased, which disrupts the logical progression of the description.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using process-specific terms like 'filtration', 'spinning', and 'weaving'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'fabirc', 'spinnig', 'waeve', and 'trasform', which are noticeable. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to describe the process, but there is little attempt to use more sophisticated or varied lexical items. The word choice is generally functional, but the recurring spelling mistakes and the lack of precise collocations limit the score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which followed by' (missing auxiliary verb), 'the fibres further mixed' (missing auxiliary), and 'These yarn balls used to waeve' (missing verb). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure is sometimes awkward, such as 'A primary and seventh step of spinnig begins'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. More attention to verb forms and sentence construction is needed.
