IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

This diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of clothes from bamboo.

Overall, this manufacturing process include nine steps and harvested bamboo tree is undergone in several changes their strips are finally converted to the fabric that is used for weaving the cloth.

Firstly, bamboo plant is grown in Spring season and the harvest is taken in the Autumn. First, bamboo is planted in spring and harvested in autumn. Afterwards, bamboo tree is cut into strips as required by using machines. After harvesting, the bamboo is cut into strips using a machine. Then the strips are required to crush to make liquid pulp. As the next step, liquid pulp is filtered to separate long fibres from liquid. Soften fibres are produced by long fibres. The long fibres are then softened by adding water and amine oxide. Water and amine oxide are added to soften fibres to make spin which is used to make yarn. The fibres are then softened by adding water and amine oxide. They are subsequently spun into yarn. Yarn is used to weave to make the relevant fabric material and clothes are made using those fabric material as the final product.

Although bamboo trees are planted in the Spring, the harvest is taken in Autumn to obtain the appropriate state of the tree. In addition, the strips that are in the solid state is converted into liquid state when forming liquid pulp. It is again changed into solid state when making fibres that is finally ended as a cloth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. However, the report suffers from significant repetition. For example, the process of cutting bamboo into strips and the softening of fibres are described multiple times in different ways within the same paragraph. This indicates a lack of clear planning and synthesis. While the main features are identified, the presentation is disjointed, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, you should group the information logically into distinct stages (e.g., raw material preparation, chemical processing, and final production) rather than listing steps in a repetitive, linear fashion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the internal flow is problematic. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or redundant, such as starting multiple sentences with 'First' or 'After'. Furthermore, the repetition of information creates a sense of confusion rather than a smooth progression of ideas. The final paragraph attempts to summarise the state changes, but it feels disconnected from the main body. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., using 'this' or 'these' to refer back to previous steps) and avoiding the restatement of the same process steps would significantly enhance the logical flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'liquid pulp', 'filtered', and 'weave' used correctly. However, there is a lack of variety, and some word choices are imprecise or repetitive. For instance, the phrase 'bamboo tree is undergone in several changes' is awkward and non-standard. You rely heavily on basic verbs like 'make' and 'cut'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to manufacturing processes, such as 'extracted', 'processed', 'transformed', or 'converted', and ensure that your collocations are natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'this manufacturing process include' (subject-verb agreement), 'strips are required to crush' (passive voice error), and 'that is finally ended as a cloth' (awkward phrasing). While the meaning is generally clear, these errors occur frequently enough to distract the reader. You should focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing processes, to ensure your writing is more polished and professional.
