IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of how bamboo fabric is being manufactured.
The process begins with the cultivation of bamboo plants in the season of spring. Following the energy and sunlight consumption, the bamboo plants are harvested to obtained woods in the autumn. As the bamboo woods are long enough to process as a whole, so for ease the raw bamboo woods are subjected to cutting. This transforms the larger woods into short strips or fragments , feasible for processing and transport.
After the preparation of raw material , the short bamboo strips are breakdown into crushed strips with crusher , releasing liquid pulp. Following this step, the crushed particles are filtered to separate long fibers from liquid and keep the fibers water-proof.
At this stage of making fine thread, the soften dehydrated fibers are processed by adding chemicals like water and amine oxide to get soft fibers. These soft fibers are spin to make a yarn. Ultimately the thread obtained is transported to textile industry which weave the yarn into desired fabric including shirts, caps, socks etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from cultivation to the final textile product. The main features are identified and described in a logical sequence. However, the response lacks a clear overview or summary of the process as a whole, which is a requirement for Band 7+. While the steps are detailed, the description of the chemical process is slightly inaccurate (e.g., 'keep the fibers water-proof' is not standard terminology for this process). To improve, ensure you include a clear introductory summary that highlights the transformation from raw material to finished product, and focus on describing the stages more precisely based on the provided diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, following the chronological order of the diagram. Paragraphing is used to separate the initial stages from the processing and final production phases. Cohesive devices such as 'Following this step', 'At this stage', and 'Ultimately' are used to guide the reader through the process. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the harvesting and the crushing stage could be more fluid. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'cultivation', 'harvested', 'crushed', and 'textile industry' used appropriately. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'obtained woods' (should be 'obtain wood') and 'breakdown into' (should be 'broken down into'). The phrase 'energy and sunlight consumption' is slightly unnatural in this context. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and avoid minor errors in word form. The range is sufficient to describe the process clearly, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'how bamboo fabric is being manufactured' (passive voice usage), 'harvested to obtained' (should be 'to obtain'), and 'These soft fibers are spin' (should be 'spun'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are some spacing issues before commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms in passive constructions will significantly improve your accuracy.
