IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram below illustrates the manufacturing of fabric from bamboo plant.
Overall, the process of fabric manufacturing involves nine stages. It begins from planting and harvesting the bamboo plant and ends when the final fabric is produced.
Firstly, to manufacture bamboo fabric, bamboo plant is planted in the Spring season and then harvested in the Autumn season. The harvested bamboo is cut into strips with the help of machinery and these strips are crushed further to make liquid pulp.
Thereafter, long fibers are separated from the liquid pulp with the help of filtration process. Water and amino acid are added to the fiber to make it softer. Further, fiber is spined to make it a yarn which is collected together. Then the yarn is later weaved to make a bamboo fabric. Finally, the manufactured fabric is used to make different types of clothing for people such apparels, socks and caps.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. The overview is clear and identifies the main stages. However, the report lacks a clear comparison or synthesis of the process stages. While it accurately describes the sequence, it reads more like a list of steps rather than a cohesive summary of the manufacturing cycle. To reach a higher band, you should focus on grouping related stages (e.g., raw material preparation vs. chemical processing) to provide a more analytical overview of the transformation process.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, following the chronological order of the diagram. Paragraphing is used, although the body paragraph is quite dense. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Thereafter', and 'Finally' are used to guide the reader through the process. However, the flow is somewhat mechanical, and the transition between the preparation of the pulp and the spinning of the yarn could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure would benefit from more varied cohesive links to improve the flow between sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'manufacturing', 'harvested', 'filtration', and 'liquid pulp' used correctly. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'spined' instead of 'spun' and 'apparels' (which is often used as a non-count noun or in specific contexts). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies heavily on the terms provided in the prompt. Incorporating more precise verbs and descriptive nouns related to industrial processes would enhance the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'bamboo plant is planted' (missing an article: 'the bamboo plant') and 'with the help of machinery' (which is slightly redundant). The phrase 'such apparels, socks and caps' is grammatically awkward. While the meaning is clear and the errors do not impede communication, the control over articles and pluralization needs improvement to achieve a higher band. More variety in complex sentence structures would also be beneficial.
