IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram shows the steps of how fabric is manufactured from bamboos.
Overall, there are nine basic steps used for the production of a high quality fabric from bamboo. The steps are labor intensive involving harvesting and cutting bamboo along with softening and filtering.
The initial step involves planting bamboo plants in spring; the time favorable for their growth. Next they are harvested in autumn. Thirdly the long bamboo sticks are cut into small strips with the help of a machine.
Further the strips are crushed to form a liquid pulp which contains the residues of the bamboo. Then the pulp is separated from liquid using a filter removing the long fibers. The fibers obtained are then subjected to softening to improve quality of the fabric with the help of chemicals like amino acid but on the other hand water is also required.
Moving to the final steps ; involve spinning of the fibres to make yam. Next the yam is woven to make fabric. Lastly the fabric is used for making different garments like shirts , socks , pants and much more.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final garment production. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview. However, the description of the process is slightly mechanical and lacks a more sophisticated synthesis of the stages. For instance, while you mention the steps, you could have grouped them more effectively to highlight the transition from raw material to finished product. The inclusion of specific details like 'amino acid' and 'water' is good, but ensure that all information is strictly derived from the diagram provided to maintain accuracy. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a body paragraph describing the process, and a concluding section. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Next', 'Thirdly', 'Further', and 'Moving to the final steps' to guide the reader through the sequence. However, some transitions feel slightly repetitive or mechanical. Paragraphing is used, but the body of the essay could be split into two distinct paragraphs—perhaps one for the raw material preparation and one for the chemical and manufacturing stages—to improve the flow and readability. Referencing is generally clear, though some punctuation errors around cohesive markers slightly disrupt the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'labor intensive', 'residues', and 'spinning'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'yam' instead of 'yarn'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the process, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more specific technical collocations related to manufacturing processes and avoid repeating basic verbs. The use of 'high quality' is a good attempt at adding descriptive value, but ensure that your word choices are consistently accurate and appropriate for a formal report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'The given diagram shows the steps of how fabric is manufactured from bamboos' (bamboo is uncountable here) and 'Moving to the final steps ; involve spinning'. The use of the semicolon is incorrect, and there are occasional issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the text. To reach a higher band, focus on refining your use of complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent accuracy in punctuation and pluralization.
