Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the development of the task. While the student identifies the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, the description is overly simplistic and lacks the necessary detail to fully explain the transformation. The overview is present but underdeveloped, and the response lacks a clear comparison or synthesis of the process stages. Because the response is 24 words under the minimum, it cannot be awarded a score higher than 5.0 for task achievement, as the information provided is insufficient to fully address the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response uses basic cohesive devices such as 'After that', 'Following', and 'Then' to sequence the steps. However, the paragraphing is poor, as the entire response is presented as a single block of text rather than distinct paragraphs for the overview and the process details. The logical progression is mechanical and repetitive, and the lack of sophisticated linking words makes the flow feel disjointed. To improve, the student should group related steps together and use a wider variety of transition signals to connect ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic verbs like 'make', 'grown', and 'cutting'. There are several inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'harvest hands' instead of 'manual harvesting' and 'crush strips' instead of 'crushed strips'. The student attempts to use technical terms from the diagram, but the overall range is insufficient to demonstrate flexibility. To reach a higher band, the student needs to incorporate more precise terminology related to industrial processes and improve their control over word forms (e.g., 'soften' vs 'softened').
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('plants bamboo grown'), incorrect verb forms ('are cutting' instead of 'are cut'), and missing articles. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with very few attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas. To improve, the student must focus on mastering passive voice constructions, which are essential for describing processes, and ensure consistent tense usage throughout the report.
