IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram below provides information on steps that are involved in manufacturing fabric from bamboo. Overall, manufacturing of fabric is a long process as growing bamboo tress and harvesting them is a time taking process and involve several seasonal changes.

The first and foremost step is to plant the bamboo plants in spring season. Then harvesting process takes place in the autumn. These bamboo leaves are cut into thin strips using a specific machinery. Followed by crushing of these strip to extract a liquid pulp out of them. Now, filtration process takes place, by separating long fibres from the liquid.

The next step is to add water and amine oxide to these long fibres which helps in softening them. Now these long fibres are spun to make a yarn. The last step is to weave out of the yarn to make fabric. This fabric is used to make different types clothes and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; the prompt asks for a summary of the manufacturing process, but you focus on the biological growth cycle (seasonal changes), which is not the primary focus of the diagram. While you identify the key steps, the description lacks detail in some areas, such as the specific chemical process involved in softening the fibres. To improve, ensure your overview focuses strictly on the industrial transformation stages rather than the agricultural growth cycle, and provide more precise descriptions of the technical steps shown in the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organised into paragraphs, moving chronologically through the process. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'The first and foremost step', 'Then', 'Followed by', and 'The next step', which help the reader follow the sequence. However, the flow is somewhat mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking phrases and use more sophisticated cohesive devices to connect sentences and ideas more fluidly, rather than relying on a simple list-like structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'manufacturing', 'harvesting', 'filtration', and 'amine oxide'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'weave out of the yarn' (should be 'weave the yarn into fabric') and 'time taking process' (should be 'time-consuming'). The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey the meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your range of technical verbs and improving your grasp of natural collocations would significantly enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'growing bamboo tress' (spelling: trees), 'involve several seasonal changes' (subject-verb agreement: involves), and 'weave out of the yarn to make fabric' (missing object/awkward phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed accurately, particularly when using passive voice, which is essential for describing industrial processes.
