IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given digram illustrates how bamboo can be converted to fabric through simple steps.
Overall, this process contains seven stages beginning with planting and harvesting of bamboo and ending with conversion into fabric and fine clothes. The bamboo gradually goes through cutting, watering and filtering and then spinning before weaving into fabric.
Firstly, bamboo plants are planted in summer then waiting for autumn to be harvested and in autumn harvesting is done. Then this strips are seperated from water using filtering procedure . Afterwards, water and amino oxide is added before spinning for the purpose of softening the fibre .
Next, spinning process starts for the conversion of fibre into yarn . When spinning process is completed fibre is now in new form called yarn before weaving it into fabric. Finally, weaving process starts and final product is obtained known as fabric after passing through 8 stages. Then this fabric is used to make fine clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate, as the text mentions 'seven stages' while the diagram clearly shows nine. Additionally, the description of the process is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, analytical focus on the key features. While the main steps are identified, the explanation of the chemical and mechanical transitions (such as the addition of chemicals) is a bit simplistic. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview accurately reflects the visual data and that the progression of the process is described with more precision.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. There is a logical progression from the beginning to the end of the manufacturing cycle. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Then', 'Afterwards', 'Next', 'Finally'). Some sentences are slightly disjointed, and the transition between the harvesting phase and the chemical processing phase could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this strips') is grammatically accurate would significantly improve the flow of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the stages of the process. There are some attempts at using specific terminology like 'amino oxide' and 'fibre', which is positive. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'this strips' (should be 'these strips') and 'filtering procedure'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic verbs like 'starts' and 'is done'. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise technical collocations related to manufacturing processes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' is often missing or misused) and pluralisation (e.g., 'this strips'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. The sentence 'When spinning process is completed fibre is now in new form' lacks necessary articles. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would be beneficial.
