IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given map outlines the steps which helps to produce fabric from the wood named bamboo. It consist a total of 9 steps.

Overall, the manufacturing of fabric is a chain process in which each step has its own significance and value.

To begin with, the whole process began with the first step which is cultivation Thus, the cultivation usually take place in spring season. Afterwards, it goes in the harvesting commonly in the autumn season. Moving forward, then the bamboo tree is cut into strips with a blade tools which undergoes in the process of crushing to form liquid pulp. Then the next step is filteration in which large fibres are substracted from liquid to form soften fibres by adaling H2O and amine oxide chemicals.

Nevertheless, the fibres are spinned afterwards to make a yarn. Atlast, the yarn is supposed to go in the process of weaving to form clothes such as warm sweater and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from cultivation to the final product. However, the description is somewhat superficial. For instance, the transition from 'liquid pulp' to 'soften fibres' lacks technical clarity, and the mention of 'H2O and amine oxide' is a good detail but could be better integrated. The overview is a bit generic; it would be stronger to highlight the transformation from a raw plant to a finished textile. While all steps are mentioned, the report lacks a clear comparative element or a more sophisticated summary of the transformation process, which is expected for a Band 6 or higher.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Afterwards', and 'Nevertheless' are used to link ideas. However, the use of 'Nevertheless' is inappropriate here, as it suggests a contrast where none exists in the process. Additionally, some transitions feel mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between the crushing and filtration stages could be smoother. Overall, the structure is functional, but the misuse of linking words prevents a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'cultivation', 'harvesting', and 'weaving'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'substracted' (should be 'extracted'), 'adaling' (spelling error for 'adding'), and 'blade tools' (redundant). The phrase 'liquid pulp' is acceptable, but the overall range is limited. To improve, you should focus on more precise technical terminology related to manufacturing processes and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'It consist a total of 9 steps' (subject-verb agreement), 'the whole process began' (tense inconsistency, should be present tense for a process description), and 'which undergoes in the process' (incorrect preposition usage). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage is required to reach a higher band.
