IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram shows the manufacturing of fabric from bamboo.
Overall, bamboo plants passed through different stages and then converted into fabrics. Fibers are obtained from bamboo plants followed by different processes (cutting, crushing, filtering and softening). These fibers are converted into yam, then weaving to make bamboo fabric.
First, bamboo plants are planted in Spring season, afterward they are harvested in Autumn, and then the process of getting yam started.
Plants are cut into strips and then these strips are crushed to make liquid pulp, which contain fibers. At next stage, liquid pulp is filtered to separate long fibers from liquid. Then, for softening fibers water and amino acid is added to long fibers obtained during filtration. When fibers becomes soft, it is started to spin to make yam. Weaving is then started from these yams to make fabric. The fabric is then transformed into different clothes like shirts, socks etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. However, the overview is somewhat simplistic and lacks a clear summary of the key features or the cyclical nature of the process. While the main steps are identified, the description of the transformation from 'liquid pulp' to 'long fibers' and the subsequent spinning process is slightly underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant trends or stages rather than just listing them. The inclusion of specific details like 'Spring' and 'Autumn' is good, but the overall structure could be more analytical to better reflect the requirements of an Academic Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'then', 'afterward', 'at next stage'). The transition between sentences could be smoother to improve the flow of information. While the logical progression is generally clear, the paragraphing is a bit disjointed, particularly the indentation and spacing. Using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect the stages of the process would improve the coherence of the essay and make the progression of ideas feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'manufacturing', 'harvested', 'liquid pulp', and 'filtration' used correctly. However, there are some inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'yam' instead of 'yarn' and 'it is started to spin' instead of 'the spinning process begins'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic verbs to describe the process. To improve, try to incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes and ensure that spelling is accurate, as 'yam' is a significant error in this context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'bamboo plants passed through' should be 'pass through', and 'which contain fibers' should be 'which contains fibers'. Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'in Spring season' and 'it is started to spin'. While the meaning is generally understandable, these recurring errors prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on consistent tense usage and refining sentence structure will help improve the overall accuracy.
