IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The figure depicts the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo.

Overall, it can be seen that the process by which fabric is produced is a multistep linear process, which consists of 3 major stages: planting, filtering, and weave to make fabric.

In the first stage, bamboo plants need to be rooted in early spring season and wait for autumn for maturity. Autumn season is best for harvesting them and it is a manual process; moreover, in 3rd step cut them into several shreds with the help of a sharp cutter.

In stage 2, need to crush the strips for extracting the liquid pulp; what is more, in 5th step a filter was used for sorting long fibres from the bamboo slurry, than added water and a chemical which name is amine oxide for smoothing threads.

In final stage, spin the fibers to make a round and organize yarn; alongwith the processed yarn is subsequently woven into cloth and lastly, crafted into daily usage materials such as, t-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview of the transformation from raw material to finished product. While the key stages are identified, the explanation of the process is occasionally disjointed, such as the abrupt mention of '3rd step' and '5th step' without sufficient context. To improve, ensure that the summary flows more naturally as a narrative of the process rather than a list of steps. The inclusion of specific details like 'amine oxide' is good, but the overall reporting could be more cohesive to better highlight the progression of the manufacturing cycle.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or awkward, such as 'what is more' and 'alongwith'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when referring to specific steps without linking them back to the previous stage effectively. While there is a clear attempt at paragraphing, the transition between the stages could be smoother. The use of bullet-point-like numbering (e.g., '3rd step') disrupts the flow of the text and makes the writing feel less like a formal report and more like a set of instructions.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some technical terms like 'slurry', 'amine oxide', and 'yarn' used correctly. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'rooted in early spring' (bamboo is typically harvested, not rooted in this context) and 'organize yarn'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic verbs. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise collocations related to industrial processes, such as 'processed', 'extracted', or 'transformed', and avoid repetitive sentence structures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing subjects (e.g., 'need to crush the strips'), incorrect verb forms ('than added water'), and awkward punctuation. The use of articles is inconsistent, and some sentences are fragmented. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from achieving a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring every sentence has a clear subject would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
