IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
the given diagram illustrates the nine-stage process involved in manufactured fabric from bamboo.
it can be clearly seen that, it is a linear, man-made process beginning with the cultivation of bamboo and ending with the production of clothing, which involves both mechanical and chemical treatments.
the process starts in spring with the planting of bamboo. the plants are then harvested in autumn, after several months of growth. once harvested, the bamboo stalks are cut into thin strips using a saw.
in the next stage, these strips are crushed to produce a liquid pulp. this pulp is then filtered through a funnel-like device to separate long fibres from the liquid. the fibres are subsequently softened by adding water and amine oxide. following this chemical treatment, the softened fibres are spin to craete yam, which is depicted as a ball of thread. this yam is then woven to produce bamboo fabric.
finally, the fabric is used to manufacture garments, such as t-shirts and socks, completing the process from raw plat to finished clothing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the bamboo manufacturing process. You have clearly outlined the nine stages from cultivation to the final product. The overview provided in the second paragraph is effective, as it highlights the linear nature of the process and the combination of mechanical and chemical treatments. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently use formal, objective language throughout. For instance, avoid phrases like 'it can be clearly seen that', which are filler phrases. Instead, focus on describing the transformation of the material more precisely. Overall, the task is well-covered.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is logically organized, following the chronological order of the process. You have used transition signals such as 'in the next stage', 'subsequently', and 'finally' to guide the reader through the steps. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the report is grouped into one large block. Dividing the process into two distinct paragraphs—perhaps separating the mechanical stages from the chemical/finishing stages—would improve the structure. Additionally, ensure that punctuation is used correctly, as there are several instances of missing capital letters at the start of sentences, which affects the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a good range of vocabulary related to the process, such as 'cultivation', 'harvested', 'crushed', 'filtered', and 'chemical treatment'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'yam' instead of 'yarn' and 'plat' instead of 'plant'. These errors are noticeable but do not impede the reader's understanding. To improve, try to incorporate more precise technical collocations, such as 'raw material' or 'industrial processing', to demonstrate a more sophisticated control of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are consistent issues with basic grammar and mechanics. Specifically, there is a lack of capitalization at the beginning of sentences throughout the text. Additionally, there are minor errors in verb forms, such as 'the softened fibres are spin to craete yam' (should be 'spun to create yarn'). While you demonstrate an attempt at complex structures, the frequency of these mechanical errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic punctuation and verb tense consistency will significantly improve your score.
