IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of making fabric using bamboo.

Overall, the bamboo is collected and then goes through several steps to extract the main fibres which will be used to make the clothes.

Initially, the bamboo will be planted and start its growth during spring, it will then become mature in autumn and harvested. Each bamboo collected will then be cut into strips which will be crushed to make liquid pulp. In order for the fibres to be usable, it needs to pass through a filter to extract the liquid and by doing so only the long fibres will be left. Right after, the long fibres will be used with a mix of water and amine oxide to make them softer.

The three last stage of the process are where it gets closer to the making of the clothes. The soften fibres will go through a spin to make a ball which is called yarn. This yarn will then be weaved to make the fabric which will be used to make different clothes such as socks and t-shirts.
