IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given image illustrates how clothes are made using bamboo.
Overall, there are a total of nine steps involved in making of a fabric using bamboo. The process can be divided into two categories, which are human labour and machine work. Workers plant bamboos, harvest them and later use the softened fibres to make the fabric, whereas machines turn the bamboo into the softened material used for creating the fabric.
Initially, bamboo trees are planted on a large scale in the spring season by the factory workers. Subsequent to this first step, the grown trees are then harvested in the autumn by the workers. After harvesting, the trunk of the tree is passed through circular saw, which cut it into strips. Afterwards, the strips are crushed to squeeze out the liquid pulp.
After the liquid pulp is obtained, the fibres within it are pulled out. Following this separation, water and amine oxide are added in the fibres to soften them. Next, the softened fibres are spun to make yarn out of them. After making yarn, it is woven to make a fabric out of it. Ultimately, this fabric is used to make different clothes such as shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process. You have provided a clear overview and followed the chronological sequence of the diagram. However, the attempt to categorize the process into 'human labour' and 'machine work' is slightly inaccurate, as the diagram does not explicitly label these categories, and some steps (like crushing) are ambiguous regarding the agent. To reach a higher band, focus on describing the physical transformations (e.g., the chemical treatment with amine oxide) more precisely rather than speculating on the labor source. The key features are well-selected, and the summary is accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized, moving clearly from the initial planting stage to the final product. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Subsequent to this', 'Afterwards', and 'Ultimately' to guide the reader through the process. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction/overview from the body of the process. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is coherent and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, including terms like 'harvested', 'softened fibres', 'liquid pulp', and 'amine oxide'. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'making of a fabric' (should be 'making fabric') and 'passed through circular saw' (missing an article: 'a circular saw'). While the vocabulary is adequate and allows for clear communication, it lacks the more sophisticated, precise terminology that would characterize a higher band. Expanding your range of process-related verbs and nouns would improve the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are occasional grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'added in the fibres' should be 'added to the fibres', and 'make a fabric out of it' is slightly repetitive. There are also minor errors with articles, such as 'passed through circular saw'. However, these errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, ensure greater consistency in preposition usage and article placement, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater grammatical control.
