IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The figure illustrates the procedural steps of making of bamboo fabric from the bamboo plants. At a glance it can be seen that bamboo plant is planted in spring season. The harvesting of bamboo plant occurs in autumn season followed by cutting into strips. The strips are further crushed to make liquid pulp which undergoes filtration process to separate long fibres from the liquid.Additionally the soft fibres are then mixed with water and amine oxide.Furthermore the soften fibres mixed with the substances are spinned to make a ball shaped yawn which is weaved to make fabric out of it.This fabric is used to make the final products such as the clothing stuff.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While the response covers the main stages of the process, it lacks the necessary detail and depth required for a Band 6 or higher. The summary is quite brief, and the lack of length means that the information is not fully developed. To improve, you must expand on the descriptions of the stages, such as explaining the chemical processes or the transformation of the materials more thoroughly, and ensure you meet the minimum word count to avoid a penalty.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is written as a single paragraph, which is not ideal for a report. While there is a logical progression from the planting stage to the final product, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical (e.g., 'At a glance', 'Additionally', 'Furthermore'). The lack of paragraphing makes the text feel like a list of steps rather than a cohesive report. To improve, you should group related stages into distinct paragraphs—for example, one for the raw material preparation and another for the chemical and manufacturing processes—and use a wider variety of linking words to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but remains quite basic. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'spinned' (should be 'spun') and 'yawn' (which is a misspelling of 'yarn'). The phrase 'clothing stuff' is too informal for an academic report. To achieve a higher band, you should incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to manufacturing processes, such as 'extraction', 'chemical treatment', 'extrusion', or 'weaving', and ensure correct spelling and formal tone throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'making of bamboo fabric from the bamboo plants' (unnecessary 'of' and 'the'), 'bamboo plant is planted' (missing article 'a' or pluralization), and 'soften fibres' (should be 'softened'). While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of complex sentence structures limits the range. To improve, try to combine sentences using relative clauses or passive voice constructions, which are particularly useful when describing industrial processes, and pay closer attention to articles and verb forms.
