IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates how bamboo fabric is made. The given 9 steps explain the manufacturing of fabric from bamboo.

Overall, the picture demonstrates the whole process of making fabric. It involves 9 steps, from planting bamboo plants to transform it into complete clothes like t-shirts or socks.

Initially, the farmers simply plant bamboo plants in fields in Spring. After some time in Autumn, the bamboos are ready for harvest. The farmers start harvesting and cut the bamboo with the help of some specialized equipment. Furthermore, the bamboo is cut into very thin strips using a cutter disc. The cutter also crush the strips to make it's liquid pulp. Then, a filter is used to separate long fibres from the liquid. As a result of adding water and amine oxide, we will obtain softened fibres. In next step a spinner is used to stretch and spin the soften fabric to make a yarn.

Moreover, the collected fibre is weaved to make fabric using machines. So, this fabric is used by various textile industries to produce a variety of clothes, that we wear on daily basis. In this way, at the end we received fabric or clothes made by bamboo.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a logical summary. However, the response lacks a clear overview or 'summary' paragraph that highlights the most significant trends or the nature of the process (e.g., that it is a multi-stage industrial transformation). While you mention the 9 steps, the description is somewhat mechanical and follows the diagram step-by-step without grouping information effectively. To improve, try to synthesize the stages into broader categories, such as 'raw material preparation' and 'chemical processing,' to demonstrate a higher level of analytical skill.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, following the chronological order of the diagram. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Initially,' 'Furthermore,' 'Then,' and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through the process. However, the paragraphing is somewhat unbalanced, with a very short introduction and a long, dense body paragraph. The flow between sentences is generally clear, but the use of cohesive devices can feel slightly repetitive or mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure that your paragraphing is more balanced and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly rather than just listing steps.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'harvesting,' 'specialized equipment,' 'liquid pulp,' and 'textile industries.' There are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'make it's liquid pulp' (should be 'its') and 'soften fabric' (should be 'softened'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. You rely on fairly simple descriptors. Incorporating more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes would enhance your score significantly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'transform it into' (should be 'transforming it into'), 'The cutter also crush' (should be 'crushes'), and 'at the end we received' (should be 'we receive'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are occasional slips in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic agreement and ensuring consistent verb tenses when describing a process.
