IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The information below shows how fabric is made from bamboo, which consists of several individual processes.
At first, the process begins in the spring season when the bamboo plants are planted. After a couple of months in autumn season, the bamboo which is ready for harvesting, undergoes the further processes. After the harvesting is done, the raw bamboo is cut into thin strips which are crushed into the liquid pulp.
After it turns into the pulp, the usable and long fabrics from the liquid are filtered and then chemically treated by adding water and amine oxide to soften the fabrics. Once all the chemical related processes are complete, the softened fibers are spun using the specialized spinning techniques. The fibers are now ready to be woven to make desirable fabric products like pants, shirts, socks and other clothing items.
All in all, the production of fabric from bamboo is a long process with multiple stages which involves planting the bamboo, harvesting it, using different chemicals, spinning, weaving and transforming the raw bamboo into desired textile materials.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final textile products. The overview is clear, and the main features are highlighted. However, the response lacks a clear comparison or synthesis of the stages. For instance, it describes the process linearly without grouping the stages into logical phases (e.g., cultivation, chemical processing, and finishing). To reach a higher band, you should aim to group the information more effectively and highlight the transition from raw material to finished product more analytically. The inclusion of specific details like 'amine oxide' is good, but the overall structure remains a simple chronological list rather than a comparative summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. The use of cohesive devices such as 'At first', 'After', and 'Once' helps guide the reader through the process. However, the cohesion is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For example, the frequent use of 'After' at the beginning of sentences makes the flow feel a bit predictable. To improve, try using a wider variety of transition words and phrases to connect the stages more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps in presenting the information in a structured manner.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'harvesting', 'crushed', 'liquid pulp', and 'specialized spinning techniques' being used correctly. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, such as 'amine oxide', which is accurate. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat words like 'process' and 'fabrics'. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate more varied synonyms and precise collocations related to industrial manufacturing processes. The current range is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly but lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically correct, and the meaning is always clear. There are some minor errors, such as 'in autumn season' (should be 'in the autumn season') and 'chemical related processes' (should be 'chemically-related' or 'chemical processes'). While the control of grammar is generally good, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more varied subordinate clauses and passive voice constructions, which are particularly useful when describing industrial processes.
