IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.
Overall, the process consists of several stages, beginning with planting bamboo in spring and harvesting it in autumn. The bamboo is then processed through a series of mechanical and chemical stages before being transformed into finished fabric.
First, bamboo plants are grown in spring and allowed to develop until autumn, when they are harvested. After harvesting, the bamboo is cut into small strips using a cutting machine. These strips are then crushed and processed to produce a soft bamboo pulp. The pulp is subsequently mixed with chemicals and treated to create a suitable material for producing fibres.
In the next stage, the processed material is passed through a machine that produces long, thin bamboo fibres. These fibres are then cleaned and dried before being spun into yarn. Finally, the yarn is woven together to form bamboo fabric, which can then be used to manufacture various textile products.
Thus, bamboo undergoes a combination of natural growth, mechanical processing and chemical treatment before becoming usable fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from the initial planting to the final textile production. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview of the transformation. The information is logically presented, and the distinction between mechanical and chemical stages is well-highlighted. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly mention the specific inputs or outputs at each stage if they are provided in the diagram (e.g., specific chemical names or machine types if labeled). Overall, the response is accurate and fulfills the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. The progression of ideas is logical, following the chronological order of the process. You have used cohesive devices such as 'First', 'After harvesting', 'subsequently', and 'In the next stage' effectively to guide the reader through the steps. The paragraphing is appropriate, separating the initial growth phase from the industrial processing stages. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between the different stages of the process is clearly established throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process accurately, such as 'harvested', 'crushed', 'processed', 'fibres', and 'spun'. The language is precise and appropriate for a technical description. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would demonstrate a wider range. To improve, consider incorporating more precise technical collocations or descriptive verbs that convey the nature of the industrial transformation more vividly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'The bamboo is then processed through a series of mechanical and chemical stages before being transformed into finished fabric.' The passive voice is used appropriately for a process description, which is a key requirement for this task type. There are very few errors, and the punctuation is accurate. The sentences are clear and easy to follow, showing a high level of control over complex sentence forms.
