IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given flow chart illustrates the information about manufacturing of bamboo fibre. There sre 7 steps in which bamboo fibre is made.

Overall, there bamboo plant is grown in spring season, harvest in autumn, cut into strips followed by soften fibre then moved into filter, crush strips, spin and weave into shirt

The first step is planting the bamboo plant in the spring season then it became a plant. After that moved to second step, this plant is harvested in the autumn season. In the third step, the plant is cutted into the strips by grander followed by crush strips to make liquid pulp.

In the fifth step, liquid pulp is moved into the filter. The filter's function is to filter the long fibres from liquid. In the sisth step, mix some water and a chemical which is known as amine oxide to fibers and create the soften fibers. These fibers is used to make the yam which is full of thread-like. In the second last step, there is a phenomenon in which weave to make fibre. In the final site, from fibre we will make various clothes such as shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. However, the description is somewhat disjointed and contains factual inaccuracies regarding the sequence of steps (e.g., mentioning the filter before the crushing process, which contradicts the diagram). While the overview attempts to summarise the process, it lacks clarity and precision. The response addresses the task requirements but fails to present the information in a logical, accurate, or fully developed manner. Some steps are described with confusion, such as the mention of 'yam' instead of 'yarn' and the vague description of the final stages, which limits the overall effectiveness of the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often confusing and lacks logical flow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The first step', 'After that', and 'In the fifth step', but they are often mechanical and do not always accurately reflect the relationship between the stages of the process. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the paragraphing does not effectively group the stages of the manufacturing process. The transition between the description of the liquid pulp and the final product is abrupt and lacks the necessary cohesive links to guide the reader through the complex stages of the diagram.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and contains several errors that occasionally impede communication. For example, the student uses 'grander' instead of 'grinder', 'yam' instead of 'yarn', and 'sisth' instead of 'sixth'. The range of vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying on simple descriptors like 'liquid pulp' and 'soften fibers'. There is little evidence of the ability to use less common or technical vocabulary accurately to describe a manufacturing process. While the reader can generally understand the intended meaning, the frequent spelling and word-choice errors prevent the response from reaching a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response shows a limited range of grammatical structures, primarily relying on simple sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'there sre 7 steps', 'cutted into the strips', and 'These fibers is used'. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, and the use of articles is often missing or incorrect. While the meaning is usually clear, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction and verb forms indicates a lack of control over complex structures. The writing lacks the variety and accuracy required for a higher band score.
