IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given flow chart illustrates the information about the manufacturing of bamboo fiber. There are 7 steps in which bamboo fiber is made.
Overall, there bamboo plant is grown in the spring season, harvested in autumn, cut into strips followed by softened fiber then moved into filter, crush strips, spin and weave into shirts
The first step is planting the bamboo plant in the spring season then it becomes a plant. After that moved to second step, this plant is harvested in the autumn season. In the third step, the plant is cut into the strips by grinder followed by crushes strips to make liquid pulp.
In the fifth step, liquid pulp is moved into the filter. The filter's function is to filter the long fibers from liquid. In the sixth step, mix some water and a chemical which is known as amine oxide to fibers and create the soften fibers. These fibers are used to make the yarn which is full of thread-like. In the second last step, there is a phenomenon in which weave to make fiber. In the final stage, from fiber we will make various clothes such as shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have successfully identified the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process. However, the response lacks precision in describing the sequence. You mention '7 steps' in the introduction, but the body paragraphs are inconsistent, skipping from the third step to the fifth, and then describing a 'second last' step. This makes the logical flow of the process difficult to follow. Furthermore, some descriptions are inaccurate; for example, the diagram shows the bamboo being crushed into strips before being processed into pulp, whereas your text suggests these are separate, disjointed actions. To improve, ensure each stage is clearly linked to the visual data provided and maintain a consistent numbering or chronological order throughout the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive start. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by mechanical and sometimes confusing transitions. Phrases like 'After that moved to second step' and 'In the second last step' are repetitive and lack sophistication. The use of cohesive devices is limited, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as when you mention 'the plant' without clearly distinguishing between the raw bamboo and the processed material. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'subsequently', 'following this', 'once the process is complete') to create a smoother flow between the stages of the manufacturing cycle.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision required for a higher score. You rely on basic verbs like 'make', 'moved', and 'cut'. There are also some awkward collocations and phrasing, such as 'full of thread-like' and 'soften fibers', which do not accurately describe the technical nature of the process. To improve, try to incorporate more precise terminology related to industrial processes, such as 'extracting', 'converting', 'dissolving', or 'spinning'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and nouns will help you convey the technical details of the diagram more effectively and naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing articles ('the bamboo plant is grown in the spring season'), incorrect verb forms ('crushes strips' instead of 'crushed strips'), and awkward sentence construction ('there bamboo plant is grown'). Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage also need attention. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound before attempting more complex forms.
