IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Overall, the manufacturing process of bamboo fabric consists of nine stages, beginning with planting the bamboo plant and ending with the production of new fabric items. The main stages include cutting, crushing, filtering and weaving for production of bamboo fabric.
The process of manufacturing bamboo fabric begins with the planting of bamboo plants and harvesting it in the autumn season. After harvesting the bamboo it is cut into strips then the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. Before passing it through filter.
Once the long fibers are separated from its liquid it is then mixed with water and amine oxide to soften the fibers which are later spun to make a yarn and the yarn is woven to form a fabric. Finally, the fabric is used to form a variety of products which include shirts, pants, socks and so on according to the market demands.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. You have identified the main features and provided a clear overview. However, the description of the chemical process is slightly simplified; for instance, mentioning 'amine oxide' is good, but the explanation of the chemical reaction could be more precise to fully capture the technical nature of the diagram. The summary is accurate, and the progression is logical, meeting the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Once', 'then', and 'Finally' helps the reader follow the sequence of events. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the chemical processing steps more distinctly from the mechanical steps. Overall, the information flows well, and the progression is clear throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, including terms like 'harvesting', 'liquid pulp', and 'spun'. There is an attempt to use specific terminology related to the diagram. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'production of bamboo fabric' being repeated, and 'form a variety of products' could be more varied. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise technical collocations related to manufacturing processes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'Before passing it through filter' (missing an article) and 'harvesting the bamboo it is cut' (needs a comma for better punctuation). Additionally, 'separated from its liquid' is slightly awkward phrasing. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and you demonstrate a reasonable control over sentence construction.
