IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The following diagram provides us information about step by step production of fabric through bamboos from spring plant bamboo to the manufacturing of clothes which we wear.
From the diagram, we can see that in the beginning, a person plants bamboo generally in spring season. Later, when it become fully grown and reaped in autumn season, farmers harvest it, cut it into strips and crush it, whether through hands or machines. Then, the main process begins. The pulp is filtered to separate long fibers from it. Gradually, it becomes soften by adding water and amine oxide chemical.
Furthermore, it goes through the process of spinning to make it like thread. Then, weave it and finally, it is sifted through the process of making clothes such shirts and socks.
Overall, this diagram illustrates the information of one by one steps involved in making fabric through bamboos.
In short, the bamboo is crushed into small pieces to make pulp and then this pulp is used in making clothes by making in fabric form.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. However, the summary is somewhat descriptive rather than analytical. While it identifies the key steps, it lacks a clear overview of the transformation process, such as the transition from raw material to chemical processing and then to textile production. The inclusion of a redundant summary paragraph at the end detracts from the overall structure. To improve, ensure the overview highlights the most significant stages rather than just repeating the steps. The response is accurate in its reporting of the diagram's content, but it could benefit from more precise terminology regarding the chemical and mechanical phases.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. There is a logical progression from the initial planting to the final manufacturing. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Then', 'Furthermore', 'Finally'). The final paragraph is unnecessary and creates a sense of repetition, as it summarizes information already provided in the body. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph serves a distinct purpose in the report, avoiding the need for a summary that simply restates the process steps.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the process clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'pulp', 'fibers', and 'amine oxide'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'sifted through the process of making clothes' and 'through bamboos' (instead of 'from bamboo'). The phrasing is occasionally unnatural, which limits the score. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations related to industrial processes, such as 'extracted', 'processed', or 'converted into'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'when it become fully grown' (should be 'becomes'), 'whether through hands or machines' (awkward phrasing), and 'making in fabric form'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more varied sentence structures will help improve the accuracy and range.
