IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pictorial diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric products from bamboo. Overall, there are 9 steps in this procedure; the first is the cultivation of bamboo plants, and the final step is the production of bamboo fabric products.

The first 6 steps can be grouped as producing and processing bamboo to make fibres. It starts with planting bamboo plants in spring and later on harvesting them in the autumn season. After the harvesting is completed, the plants are split into small strips, which are then crushed into a liquid pulp. This pulp is passed through a filter that separates the long fibres from the liquid. Finally, these fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide.

In the remaining steps, the softened fibres are wrapped in a spinning motion to form a ball of yarn. Then this yarn is used to make fabric by a technique called weaving. Ultimately, the fabric that is made through this technique is used to make clothes such as socks and shirts in the final step.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from cultivation to the final product. You have clearly identified the main features and grouped the steps logically, which helps the reader follow the progression. The overview is concise and provides a good summary of the process. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly highlight the most significant transformations or key inputs, such as the chemical treatment phase, to provide a more analytical summary rather than just a sequential description of the steps.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a clear logical progression. The use of paragraphing is effective, separating the initial processing stages from the final manufacturing steps. Cohesive devices such as 'The first 6 steps', 'After the harvesting is completed', and 'In the remaining steps' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the process. The flow of information is smooth, and each sentence contributes to the overall clarity of the description.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process accurately, including terms like 'cultivation', 'liquid pulp', and 'spinning motion'. The language is precise and appropriate for a technical description. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated or precise technical collocations related to industrial manufacturing would elevate the response further. There are no spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'After the harvesting is completed, the plants are split into small strips, which are then crushed into a liquid pulp.' Punctuation is accurate, and the sentence structures are generally error-free. The writing is clear and easy to follow, showing a high level of accuracy throughout the text.
