IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given process illustrate the steps of fabric manufacture from bamboo. It is a well described representation.

overall, the process involves many steps which commence with planting bamboo plants and culminate in production of fabric produts.

To begin with, firstly the plants of bamboo is grown in the season of spring. when the bamboo grow fully later it is harvested in Autumn season. Once it is harvested, it is sent for strips in which bamboo is cut in pieces . afterwhich the strips are crushed, so the liquid pulp is extracted from the bamboo strips. then the liquid pulp was sent for filteration in which long fibres seperated from the liquid.

In the subsequent steps, once fibres is seperated from the liquid pulp. water and amine oxide are added in fibres to make the fibres soften. before making fabric weave it was spin to make yam. Once weave steps is completed it then converted into final products such as shirts, socis etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. However, the overview is somewhat generic and lacks a clear summary of the key features or the transformation process. While the main steps are identified, the description of the process is occasionally superficial, and the connection between the stages could be more clearly articulated. The response addresses the prompt adequately but does not fully highlight the most significant aspects of the transformation, such as the chemical processing stage, which is a crucial part of the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'To begin with', 'In the subsequent steps'). There are also issues with referencing and flow; for example, the transition between the crushing of strips and the filtration process is abrupt. While the overall progression is clear, the lack of sophisticated linking words and occasional awkward phrasing in the transitions prevents the response from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. There are several spelling errors, such as 'filteration' (filtration), 'seperated' (separated), 'yam' (yarn), and 'socis' (socks). Additionally, the word choice is sometimes simplistic, such as 'sent for strips' and 'make the fibres soften'. To improve, you should focus on using more precise technical terminology related to manufacturing processes and ensure accurate spelling of key terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the plants of bamboo is grown', 'fibres is seperated') and tense inconsistencies ('the process illustrate', 'the liquid pulp was sent'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors limits the score in this criterion.
