IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The process diagram illustrates the steps of production of bamboo clothing.
Overall, the procedure has nine steps to be followed which is initiated by planting bamboo on a specific season and ends with the final product such as t shirt, sock, made from weaved bamboo material. First four steps account for the pre-processing of the bamboo while subsequent steps describe the main process of converting fibres to bamboo material.
Regarding the initial stages, bamboo trees were harvested on autumn which was planted on the previous spring. Later on, bamboo trees are cut and crushed inside a large rotating blade in order to make liquid pulp out of it.
In terms of rest of the phases, a filter tool was used to separate the long bamboo fibres from the pulp. The fibres at this stage was fragile in texture and was mixed with water and amine oxide chemical. In the next step, the fibres were hardened enough which was then spinned to make a yarn. The fabrics are weaved and used to make various clothing items consequently.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from harvesting to the final product. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview. However, the description of the process is slightly mechanical, and some details could be more precisely linked to the visual information. For instance, the distinction between the 'pre-processing' and 'main process' is a good attempt at synthesis, but the explanation of the chemical stage is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that all technical steps are described with more precision and that the comparison between stages is more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, following the chronological order of the diagram. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'In terms of', and 'consequently' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly repetitive or mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'the fibres', 'the pulp') is consistently accurate to maintain a smoother narrative throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pre-processing', 'liquid pulp', and 'amine oxide'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'spinned' (should be 'spun') and 'weaved' (should be 'woven'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the process clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise technical collocations and ensure that verb forms are used correctly in context to enhance the overall professional tone of the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, particularly with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency. For example, 'bamboo trees were harvested on autumn which was planted' contains tense confusion and agreement issues. Additionally, 'The fibres at this stage was fragile' should be 'were fragile'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and tense consistency will significantly improve your accuracy.
