IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

THE DIAGRAM ILLUSTRATES THE PROCESS OF PRODUCING BAMBOO FABRIC, FROM THE CULTIVATION OF BAMBOO PLANTS TO THE MANUFACTURE OF FINISHED CLOTHING.

OVERALL THERE ARE TOTAL OF NINE STEPS IN THE PROCESS. BAMBOO IS INITIALLY planted and harvest before being processed into fibers. These fibers are than treated

spun into yarn, Which is woven to produce fabric that can ultimately be used to make a proper clothes.

First bamboo plants are planted in spring. They are than harvested in autumn, After which the bamboo cut into thin strips. In the fourth stage strips are crushed to produce liquid pulp. The pulp is subsequantly filtered to separate the long fibers from the liquid.

Next, the fibers are soften by adding water and amine oxide.

Once it's softened, They are spun into yarn. the yarn is than woven to create bamboo fabric. Finally , this fabric is used to manufacture clothing items, such as socks and t-shirts.

Overall, the processed include the chemical process to make usable fiber from the bamboo.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from cultivation to the final product. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview. However, the description of the process is somewhat mechanical and lacks a more sophisticated synthesis of the stages. While you mention the chemical process, you could have better highlighted the transition from raw material to intermediate product (pulp) and then to the final textile. The inclusion of specific examples like 'socks and t-shirts' is good, but ensure that all steps are described with equal clarity to fully meet the requirements for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs detailing the process. You use transition signals such as 'First', 'Next', and 'Finally' to guide the reader. However, some cohesive devices are used repetitively or mechanically. For instance, the transition 'than' is used incorrectly in place of 'then' multiple times, which disrupts the flow. Additionally, the referencing could be improved; for example, 'the processed' in the final sentence is grammatically awkward and does not effectively link back to the preceding information. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cultivation', 'harvested', 'crushed', and 'filtered'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'subsequantly' instead of 'subsequently' and 'than' used instead of 'then'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise vocabulary related to industrial processes, such as 'extraction', 'conversion', or 'chemical treatment', and ensure that common words are spelled correctly. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and word choice (e.g., 'bamboo cut into thin strips' should be 'bamboo is cut', and 'the processed include' should be 'the process includes'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary capitalization and misplaced commas. These errors do not generally impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage throughout the process description will help improve your accuracy.
