IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
the pictorial representation demonstrates the data related to process involved in manufacturing of fabric from bamboo. Moreover, 9 steps are mentioned in the formation of cloth.
Overall, the process begins with the cultivation and harvesting of the bamboo plant. the cycle involves various steps till the formation of yarn and the process last when cloth has been made from fabric by weaving.
In the beginning the bamboo plant is cultivated during spring season and it is major raw material for production of fabric. secondly the bamboo plant is harvested during autumn season and then it cut into the strips. Moreover, fourth step include making of liquid pulp from stirps by crushing them and after this filter is used to separate the long fibres from liquid. Furthermore, water and amine oxide is added to it so fibres can get soft. till seventh step whole processing got done and yarn has been made by spinning then weaving is done to make fabric. Moreover, at last cloth has been made from fabric

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from cultivation to the final product. However, the description is somewhat superficial. While you mention nine steps, the explanation of the chemical and mechanical processes (such as the use of amine oxide or the specific transformation from yarn to fabric) is underdeveloped. The summary lacks a clear, analytical overview of the transformation process, and the final sentence is repetitive. To improve, ensure you provide a more detailed account of the technical stages shown in the diagram rather than just listing them sequentially.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into three paragraphs, which is appropriate for this task. There is a logical progression from the beginning to the end of the process. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, with frequent use of 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore' to start sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'till seventh step whole processing got done', which lacks a smooth transition. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for a basic description of the process. You use some relevant terms like 'cultivation', 'harvesting', 'liquid pulp', and 'spinning'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'process last when cloth has been made' instead of 'the process concludes' or 'the final stage'. The range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple phrasing. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to manufacturing processes and improve your control over word collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles (e.g., 'the bamboo plant', 'the filter'), verb tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'fourth step include', 'whole processing got done'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several sentences starting with lowercase letters. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to distract the reader. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy, such as proper capitalization and article usage, will significantly improve the quality of your writing.
