The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The illustration displays the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo plants.

Overall, it is a man-made linear process consisting of several stages, beginning with planting bamboo saplings, followed by harvesting, processing and weaving the fabric into clothing material. The final step is the production of fabric made from bamboo fibres.

The fabric production process begins with planting bamboo plants in spring and harvesting them in autumn. The harvested bamboo is cut into strips using a machine. Furthermore, the chopped strips are crushed in order to extract the liquid pulp from them.

At step 5, the extracted liquid pulp is filtered to isolate the long fibres from the liquid. Additionally, to soften the separated fibres, water along with amine oxide is added. The soft fibres are then spun to make yarn. In the next stage, the yarn is used to weave the fabric, and the process ends with the production of fabric.
