The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo.

Overall, there are nine stages in which bamboo plant is converted to final finished clothes. This starts from the plants of bamboo in spring and after a series of continuous processes fabric is prepared in the ninth stage.

Bamboo plants grow in spring till Autumn when these are harvested by farmers. The harvested plants are cut into small strips and pieces in industry. Next, the strips are crushed to make liquid pulps. As part of the 5th stage, the crushed strips are filtered so that long fibres are separated from the liquid. In the sixth stage, water and amine oxide is added to these fibres to soften these. Then, fibres are spinned to make a yam. In the 8th stage, fibres are woven in specific patterns to make the fabric. Finally, fully finished products like shirts or socks are comleted.

The first two stages involve the work of farmers while the next seven steps involve the work of labours in industry. The last three steps are not very labour intensive as we have the fibres ready now and we have to utilize these to make final fabric.
