The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The illustrated diagram outlines the process by which fabric is manufactured from bamboo. Overall, it is a linear process which consists of nine stages starting with planting bamboo plants and ending with the production of fabric. Moreover, this process is not labour-intensive and requires minimal intervention and some basic technical equipment.

First of all, in spring bamboo plants are sown. These plants are then harvested after some months in Autumn on when they're mature. The stalks of the harvested plants are mechanically chopped into strips which are sub-sequently crushed to form a liquid pulp. This process of growing, harvesting, cutting and crushing is the preparatory phase.

Moving on, the liquid pulp is then passed through a filter where long fibres are separated from the mixture. These separated fibres are softened using water and

amine oxide, a chemical agent. Furthermore, once the fibres are softened they are spun into a yam, which is woven to produce fabric. Eventually, this fabric is transformed into garments, such as socks, T-shirts and and the production cycle <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">........</span> comes to an end.
