IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
the process diagram illustrates the stages of fabric production from bamboo.
Overall, it is clear that the manufacturing of fabric involves 9 stages. To initiate with bamboo planting and harvesting to the development of final products such as shirts, socks etc.
Primarily, the bamboo has planted in spring season and then harvested in Autumn. Subsequently, these harvested bamboos are then cut into strips. Then followed by crushing stage, at there the liquid pulp is produced and then pulp is filtered out to separate long fibers and other impurities from it.
In the sixth stage, the filtered pulp goes into a chemical procedure, the water and amine oxide are added to make soften fibres. the next steps is the main stage that soften fibres are converted to a yarn, and this threads are used to make fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response covers the main stages of the process from planting bamboo to the finished fabric products, identifying the nine key steps. However, the word count falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 135 words, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While an overview is attempted ('involves 9 stages'), the second sentence of the introduction is grammatically incomplete and fails to form a complete overview clause. Furthermore, some details are slightly inaccurate or vague, such as stating 'at there the liquid pulp is produced' instead of focusing on the crushing stage. To reach a higher band, the response must meet the minimum length requirement and present a fully developed, accurate summary of all visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text exhibits a basic overall progression, moving sequentially through the manufacturing steps using transition markers like 'Primarily', 'then', and 'Subsequently'. However, paragraphing is underdeveloped, with the entire body of the text lumped into a single block alongside the introduction. Cohesive devices are sometimes used inaccurately or mechanically, as seen in phrases like 'To initiate with bamboo planting...' and 'at there the liquid pulp is produced'. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow of information. To improve, the student should structure the essay into distinct paragraphs (e.g., introduction/overview and body paragraphs) and use cohesive devices more naturally and accurately.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully incorporating process-related terms such as 'harvested', 'strips', 'liquid pulp', 'filtered', 'fibres', and 'yarn'. However, there are noticeable lexical and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'the bamboo has planted' instead of 'is planted', and 'soften fibres' instead of 'softened fibres'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, lacking more sophisticated or precise lexical items. Word choice errors occasionally require the reader to interpret the intended meaning, restricting the score to a band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several significant grammatical errors, including sentence fragments ('To initiate with bamboo planting and harvesting to the development of final products such as shirts, socks etc.'), passive voice errors ('the bamboo has planted'), and tense/form inconsistencies ('to make soften fibres'). Punctuation is also weak, with missing capitalisation and run-on phrasing. While meaning is generally clear despite these errors, the frequency of grammatical inaccuracies prevents the response from achieving a higher band score.
