IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram demonstrates the production process of fibric produced from bamboo.

Overall, the process of making bamboo fibric involves five main stages, planting bamboo, crushing it into pulp, filtration to obtain long fibres, softening the fibres and weaving them to create fibric.

To commence, after the growing of bamboo plants in spring, formers cutdown the mature bamboo in autumn, in next stage is to cut these plants into strips by circular saw. once sliced, these strips are smashed into small pieces, prepared to be made liquid pulp.

Going into the depth, after being converted into pulp, the long fibres are seperated by filteration process. Then comes the softening procedure, where water and amine oxide are blended with the fibre extracted in previous stage, making the fibre is to spin. Finally, the rope of fibre are spun into yarn, ready to be weaven which can be use to make different fibric products such as, clothes, socks, t-shirt, and other fibric products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully summarises the main features of the diagram illustrating how bamboo fabric is manufactured. The response outlines the primary stages from planting and harvesting to crushing, filtration, softening, spinning, and weaving, satisfying the core requirements of Academic Task 1. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the main phases of the linear process. However, some minor details are slightly generalised or imprecise compared to the source diagram (for instance, reducing the detailed steps into broad categories). Nevertheless, the key processes are covered well, and all important sequential steps are mentioned. This performance aligns comfortably with Band 6.5 to 7.0; since all parts are addressed and the main features are highlighted, a band score of 6.5 is awarded.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text is structured with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow the chronological progression of the manufacturing process. Cohesive devices and transitional markers such as 'To commence', 'Going into the depth', and 'Finally' are used to guide the reader through the sequence. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or awkward (e.g., 'Going into the depth'). Paragraphing is generally appropriate, separating the introduction/overview from the detailed body stages. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional run-on structures slightly disrupt the flow. Overall, the logical organisation is clear and progression is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptors well.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a manufacturing process, using terms such as 'production process', 'mature bamboo', 'circular saw', 'liquid pulp', and 'filtration process'. However, there are several noticeable spelling errors throughout the response, most notably the recurring misspelling of 'fibric' instead of 'fabric', as well as 'formers' instead of 'farmers', 'cutdown' instead of 'cut down', 'seperated' instead of 'separated', 'filteration' instead of 'filtration', and 'weaven' instead of woven. While the intended meaning remains clear, these lexical and spelling inaccuracies restrict the score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and participle phrases such as 'after the growing of bamboo plants in spring' and 'once sliced, these strips are smashed'. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing constructions, such as 'in next stage is to cut', 'making the fibre is to spin', and 'which can be use to make'. Punctuation is also occasionally weak, with comma splices present in complex sentences. Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded. This performance is characteristic of Band 6.0.
