IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram demonstrates the production process of fabric produced from bamboo.

Overall, the process of making bamboo fabric involves five main stages, planting bamboo, crushing it into pulp, filtration to obtain long fibres, softening the fibres and weaving them to create fabric.

To commence, after the growing of bamboo plants in spring, farmers cut down the mature bamboo in autumn, in next stage is to cut these plants into strips by circular saw. once sliced, these strips are smashed into small pieces, prepared to be made liquid pulp.

Going into the depth, after being converted into pulp, the long fibres are separated by a filteration process. Then comes the softening procedure, where water and amine oxide are blended with the fibre extracted in previous stage, making the fibres is to spin. Finally, the ropes of fibres are spun into yarn, ready to be weaven which can be used to make different fabric products such as, clothes, socks, t-shirts, and other textile items.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully outlines the main features of the process diagram, covering the entire sequence from planting bamboo to final textile manufacturing. The overview clearly highlights the core stages involved, such as planting, crushing, filtering, softening, and weaving. However, there are minor gaps in tracking specific details, such as omitting the harvesting stage in the overview and slightly misrepresenting the exact sequence of steps in the second paragraph. Nevertheless, all 9 steps of the diagram are touched upon, providing a clear and comprehensive summary overall.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged into logical paragraphs with an introductory sentence, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the stages. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the process, such as 'To commence', 'after being converted', and 'Finally'. However, progression is occasionally awkward or repetitive, and referencing is sometimes mechanical, as seen in phrases like 'in next stage is to cut' and 'making the fibres is to spin'. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but logical flow could be enhanced with smoother transitions between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as 'liquid pulp', 'filtration', 'amine oxide', and 'yarn'. Attempts are made to use less common vocabulary, but these are sometimes accompanied by word-choice or collocation errors, such as 'smashed' instead of 'crushed' or 'weaven' instead of 'woven'. Spelling and lexical control are generally sufficient for communication, but lack the precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating participial phrases and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'after the growing of bamboo plants in spring, farmers cut down the mature bamboo'). However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, including tense issues ('making the fibres is to spin'), missing articles or prepositions ('in next stage', 'by circular saw'), and awkward phrasing. These errors occasionally disrupt the reading experience, though they do not completely impede overall communication.
